South Solway Wildfowlers Assocation
The South Solway Wildfowlers Association (SSWA) was founded in 1953. The Association leases and controls the shooting over thirty miles of foreshore on the English side of the Solway Firth, an area covering over 8000 hectares. This area stretches from the village of Skinburness to Rockliffe. It also includes large expanses of salt marsh.
The Association also lease & control large areas of tidal mud and sand from Moricambe bay to the upper Solway flats. These large areas of tidal mud are designated as no shooting zones & are a sanctuary to thousands of wildfowl and waders which come to winter on the Solway.
Our sport of Wildfowling usually takes place at dawn & dusk, when the ducks and geese are moving from their roosts to their feeding grounds. On occasion, when the weather & tides are favourable, you may see the wildfowler pursuing ducks through the daylight hours. Wildfowlers are a hardy lot, having to endure early mornings and late nights, venturing out in the foulest of weather. Though this may sound grim, the sights & sounds from the foreshore and salt marshes can be very rewarding in themselves, leaving the individual with a lifetime of memories.
